Residents of Jote village near Itanagar remain on edge following the discovery of pug marks, suspected to belong to a Royal Bengal Tiger, in the Poma forest division near the National Institute of Technology (NIT) campus.
Early reports from the villagers indicate a possible sighting of a big cat in the morning, which was immediately reported to forest officials. A team from the forest department visited the site and confirmed the pug marks as those of a tiger after preliminary analysis, according to a Range Forest Officer (RFO).
Forest officials suspect the tiger might have strayed from the Pakke Tiger Reserve, as such incidents have been reported in the Poma Jote region in the past. To confirm the animal’s presence and track its movements, the department plans to install 50 camera traps in the area.
The Poma Wildlife Range Office, through foresters Tadang Rai and Sali Sengo, has issued a public warning urging residents to remain vigilant. Footprints were also discovered near Jote Market, heightening concerns among the locals.
The advisory includes the following safety measures:
1. Avoid venturing outdoors at night.
2. Exercise caution during outdoor activities, such as picnics or jungle camps.
3. Report any unusual animal sightings to authorities immediately.
“This notice is issued to inform all concerned that a tiger or leopard may be present in the Jote area. We urge the public to take precautionary measures to ensure safety,” the notice stated.
Forest officials are continuing their monitoring efforts and have assured the public that measures are being taken to mitigate risks while addressing the situation.
