The India U19 football team received a grand welcome at Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar, as they arrived to participate in the SAFF U19 Championship 2025, hosted by the state from May 9 to 18.
This is the first time Arunachal is hosting an international football tournament, with matches set to be played at the Golden Jubilee Stadium in Yupia, Papumpare district.
The tournament will feature teams from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and the Maldives, with the final scheduled for May 18.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who also serves as the President of the Arunachal Pradesh Football Association (APFA), is leading the initiative to place the state on the international football map.
APFA Secretary and AIFF Treasurer Kipa Ajay, speaking to the media, said, “It’s a moment of immense pride for all Arunachalees. This international event showcases our love for football, which runs in our blood. We welcomed the Indian team today, and preparations are in full swing.”
The opening match between India and Sri Lanka will be held on May 9 at 7:15 PM at the Golden Jubilee Stadium. India U19 coach Bibiano Fernandes has already arrived to inspect logistics and pitch readiness. Turf facilities at both Rajiv Gandhi Stadium and Golden Jubilee Stadium ensure uninterrupted play despite potential monsoon rains.
Ajay also emphasized the tournament’s wider impact, stating that over 200 local youths are engaged in the event, gaining exposure and international experience.
Ticket prices are set at Rs 550 for covered seats and Rs 250 for open seats (valid for two matches), available via the 'Slot Allot app' on Play Store.
Security measures are being coordinated with local administration and law enforcement agencies to ensure smooth conduct throughout the event.
Highlighting the local pride, Kage Dodum, father of Arunachal’s own Omang Dodum, who has been representing Team India since 2023, said, “Our entire clan came to welcome him and the team. It’s a proud moment not just for our family, but for all of Arunachal.”
An invitation has also been extended to NEUFC owner and actor John Abraham, following MoUs signed with the club for U13 and U15 training initiatives in Yupia and Namsai. These aim to build a pipeline of football talent from Arunachal under the state government's support.
With football fever running high, Arunachal Pradesh is all set to make its international sporting debut a memorable and successful one.
