Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, on June 21 handed over compensation cheques worth Rs 19 crore to the villagers of Chuna in Tawang district for land acquired under the Damteng–Chuna road project and by the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
The move marks a key milestone in delivering development to one of India's remotest frontiers.
The cheque distribution ceremony took place during the 11th International Day of Yoga celebrations at Chuna-Mago village under the Jang Sub-Division of Tawang.
The event was held against the majestic backdrop of the Himalayas and witnessed spirited participation from villagers, school children, government officials, and soldiers of the Indian Army’s Gajraj Corps. The theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” emphasized the deep connection between individual well-being and environmental health.
Chief Minister Khandu, Union Minister Rijiju, Sports Minister Kento Jini, along with senior officials including Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo and SP DW Thongon, attended the event. Army brigade commanders and the ITBP DIG were also present.
In his address, Khandu highlighted the importance of Yoga in building mental clarity and physical resilience, urging young people to integrate it into their daily routines. Rijiju praised the Indian Army for practicing Yoga even in harsh frontier conditions, calling it a symbol of discipline and inner strength.
The day began with a scientific overview of Yoga’s holistic benefits, followed by a mass session aligned with the AYUSH Ministry's protocol. Participants practiced breathing techniques, meditation, and asanas like Kapalbhati and Pranayama under certified instructors.
The high-altitude celebration also underscored the unique synergy between the armed forces and local communities. In parallel, a similar Yoga Day event was held at Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Sports Stadium in Tawang town, led by local MLA Namgey Tsering and attended by monks, students, and security forces.
