Arunachal Pradesh hosted its first-ever GI (Geographical Indication) Mahotsav in New Delhi, showcasing 20 GI-tagged products from various tribes of the state. During the inaugural day, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju emphasized the crucial role of GI tagging in safeguarding the unique identity of these products, highlighting its potential to promote them effectively in both national and international markets.
The three-day event, held at Select City Walk in Saket, was inaugurated by Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan, with Chief Minister Pema Khandu declaring it as an annual calendar event.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu spoke about the need to elevate the region’s agricultural products to a global platform, showcasing Arunachal’s rich culture and traditions.
Delhites expressed their appreciation for the unique cultural display and urged others to visit Arunachal Pradesh to experience its incredible natural beauty. Some visitors who had previously traveled to the state called on others to explore not just Arunachal but the entire Northeast, renowned for its diverse landscapes and vibrant cultures.
The GI Mahotsav has served as an important step in empowering local communities, giving them the recognition and market access they deserve while preserving and promoting the indigenous crafts and traditions of Arunachal Pradesh.
The event highlighted the state's rich heritage in textiles, handicrafts, and agricultural products, emphasizing the immense potential of local artisans, weavers, and farmers. Arunachal Pradesh boasts the highest number of GI tags in the entire Northeast, with products such as the Arunachal Orange gaining national and international recognition for their distinctiveness.
