Arunachal's Itanagar gets first woman mayor as new IMC team takes oath

Itanagar on January 12 witnessed a historic moment as Likha Nari Tadar was sworn in as the first woman Mayor of the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC).

The swearing-in ceremony of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and corporators from all 20 wards was held at DK Hall in Itanagar.

Likha Nari Tadar, the BJP corporator from Ward 16, was elected Mayor, while Tok Tabin Camdir, the corporator from Ward 19, was sworn in as Deputy Mayor. Both leaders are first-time elected corporators and will serve a five-year term from 2025 to 2030.

They were the official candidates of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which secured a decisive mandate by winning 14 of the 20 wards in the recent civic body elections held on December 15, 2025.

During the ceremony, certificates of election were distributed to all 20 corporators of the Itanagar Municipal Corporation, formally marking the beginning of the new council’s tenure.

Speaking to India TodayNE, Mayor Likha Nari Tadar stressed the importance of teamwork and collective responsibility, stating that her priority would be to work together with all corporators to make Itanagar a matter of pride for Arunachal Pradesh and to transform it into the cleanest city in India.

Former Mayor Tamme Phassang became emotional and assured his full support and cooperation to the newly elected team. He said the smooth functioning of the new IMC would be in the larger interest of the city and its residents, and pledged all possible help to the new leadership.
