Amid ongoing monsoon-triggered landslides in Arunachal Pradesh’s Papum Pare district, District Commissioner Jiken Bomjen inspected a critical erosion site near Gyan Mission Orphanage School, which is facing severe risk due to soil instability. The visit signals a stronger administrative focus on illegal earth cutting and natural hazards threatening vulnerable institutions.
The orphanage, located near a landslide-prone area, has reported worsening erosion with each spell of rain. During his inspection, DC Bomjen assured the institution of immediate relief measures and pledged to monitor the situation closely.
The commissioner also took the opportunity to highlight the need for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) engagement from private enterprises. Inaugurating a new kitchen at the orphanage, he urged local business houses to step in and support welfare institutions that serve underprivileged children.
Addressing broader district concerns, Bomjen warned against the rising drug problem and called on the youth to prioritise health and education over substance abuse. He acknowledged the significant grassroots efforts led by Yasi Nalo Byaling, Chairperson of the Gyan Mission Orphanage, who has managed to sustain the school without government aid.
The school, established fully in 2010 after starting in a rented space in 2006, continues to serve orphans and children from below poverty line (BPL) families. With limited infrastructure and no official support, the institution now faces a new threat in the form of advancing landslides.
Byaling appealed to the state government and the public for intervention, requesting both structural protection for the school grounds and long-term support for the children’s welfare. The district administration has initiated site assessments, and further actions are expected as the monsoon progresses.
