Arunachal’s unique bloodless festival ‘Longte’ celebrated with grandeur in Kurung Kumey

Arunachal Pradesh's Kurung Kumey district, situated near the Indo-China border came alive with colour and tradition as the Longte Festival — the only known bloodless festival of the state — was celebrated with great enthusiasm.

Held in Koloriang constituency, the week-long celebration was inaugurated in a traditional manner, drawing participation from all four circles — Sarli, Damin, Parsiparlo, Polosang — and the district headquarters, Koloriang.

The festival, deeply rooted in the customs of the Nyishi community, is an age-old tradition observed to symbolically fence off evil spirits, ensuring harmony and prosperity in human settlements, livestock, and agricultural fields.

Local MLA and Advisor to the PHED Minister, Pani Taram, along with Deputy Commissioner Vishakha Yadav, IAS, attended the inaugural ceremony. The festivities began with an oath-taking pledge, opening of the traditional Namlo, and a vibrant showcase of indigenous sports.

Pani Taram emphasised the need to preserve the original form of Longte, a festival that has stood the test of time and remains a symbol of identity and pride for the Nyishi people. He also addressed the APFRA Act, clarifying that it is aimed at safeguarding the region’s indigenous heritage without targeting any specific community.

Deputy Commissioner Vishakha Yadav highlighted the significance of Longte as a springtime celebration focused on peace, unity, and well-being — unique in its bloodless rituals and inclusive spirit.

Pani Tare, Chairman of the Longte Festival Committee, called on the community to continue upholding and protecting this precious cultural legacy, which stands as a testament to the Nyishi people’s rich heritage and reverence for life.

The Longte Festival continues to be a powerful reminder of Arunachal’s vibrant cultural fabric, inspiring younger generations to embrace and celebrate their roots with pride.
