Bhaichung Bhutia kicks off talent hunt in Arunachal's Mebo

A historic moment unfolded for young footballers of Arunachal Pradesh as former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia, along with his team from Baichung Bhutia Football School (BBFS), kicked off a rigorous trial and assessment camp at Kiyit village playground under Mebo Sub-Division on Thursday.

The week-long training program (March 14-21), organized under the initiative of Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng, has drawn over 250 budding footballers, including players from Doimukh in Papum Pare district. The trials are open to boys and girls aged 13 to 19, offering them an opportunity to be scouted and trained by one of India’s greatest footballers.

The program was inaugurated in the presence of MLA Oken Tayeng, ADC Mebo Sibo Passing, EAC Nancy Yirang Modi, local leaders, and representatives of the Kiyit village-based group ‘Yondip.’ All necessary training equipment, including footballs, nets, jerseys, and food for participants, has been sponsored by MLA Tayeng as part of his commitment to nurturing young sports talent in Arunachal Pradesh.

Addressing the young players, Bhaichung Bhutia expressed optimism about the raw talent in the region and the potential to groom future national and international footballers.

"For the past 15 years, BBFS has been coaching young players, many of whom have gone on to play for India and various leagues. I believe Arunachal has immense football talent, but due to a lack of structured training, many players haven't had the opportunity to shine on regional and national platforms," said Bhutia.

He encouraged the young players by sharing his own journey from a small village in South Sikkim to becoming the captain of the Indian football team.

"If I can make it from Tinkitam, why not you? If legends like Sunil Chhetri, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi can continue playing at 40, 38, and beyond, you too can reach the highest level with dedication and discipline. Football is not just about talent—it requires hard work, commitment, and a never-give-up attitude," he emphasised.

Bhutia also acknowledged the efforts of Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who serves as the President of the Arunachal Football Association, in promoting the sport among the youth.

MLA Oken Tayeng described the initiative as “a promising beginning” in shaping the football culture of the region.

"This collaboration with the esteemed Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools is a major step toward nurturing grassroots talent. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to my dear friend Bhaichung Bhutia for traveling all the way from Sikkim to inspire our budding stars. His presence is a beacon of hope for our young footballers," said Tayeng.

He also announced plans to establish a football academy in Mebo to provide continuous training and exposure for young players.

The trials and assessments will conclude on March 21, after which the best-performing players will be selected for advanced training, scholarships, and sponsorships under the BBFS program. The initiative has already sparked excitement among villagers and young players, many of whom have only seen Bhutia on television before.

For Mebo’s football dreamers, this is more than just a training camp—it is the first step toward national and international recognition.
