BJP emerges largest party in Itanagar civic polls; PPA dominates Pasighat

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party in the Itanagar Municipal Corporation, winning 14 of the 20 wards, as counting of votes for the panchayat and civic body elections in Arunachal Pradesh began on December 20, amid tight security arrangements.
 

According to election officials, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won three seats, while the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) secured two seats. One seat was won by an Independent candidate.
 

In the Pasighat Municipal Corporation, the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) dominated the contest, winning five of the eight wards. The BJP won two seats, while one seat went to an Independent candidate.
 

Several BJP candidates in Itanagar were elected unopposed, including Techi Mema (Ward 4), Gichik Tachu (Ward 6), Kabak Sumpa (Ward 7), and Tok Tabin Camdir (Ward 19). Among the closely contested wards, Independent candidate Yaro Nayam won Ward 3 by a narrow margin of 27 votes, while BJP’s Kipa Uruni clinched Ward 20 by just two votes. NCP candidate Gora Lotak recorded the highest margin of victory, winning Ward 11 by 818 votes.
 

The counting began at 8 am at 45 designated centres across 27 districts of the state.


Meanwhile, Toko Babu, Deputy Commissioner of the Itanagar Capital Region, said the elections were conducted peacefully. He urged candidates and their supporters to maintain calm, describing the electoral process as a democratic exercise where victory and defeat are part of the system.
