‘I have been in favour of mega dams’: Arunachal MLA Ninong Ering backs Siang project, calls for informed approach

Pasighat West MLA and former Union Minister Ninong Ering has expressed support for mega dam projects, urging people to adopt a positive and informed approach towards the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP).

Speaking to the media, Ering said mega dam projects could contribute to flood control, irrigation and regional development, provided adequate safety measures were implemented and the concerns of affected communities were addressed.

Referring to major dam projects such as the Bhakra Nangal Dam and Hirakud Dam, Ering said India had experience in constructing large dams with earthquake-resistant measures and arrangements for the rehabilitation and relocation of affected residents. He also pointed to the potential for tourism and other economic opportunities in areas surrounding such projects.

Acknowledging concerns over seismic risks in the Northeast, Ering noted that the region falls within a seismically active zone. He also referred to China's plans for a major hydropower project, emphasising the need for precautions while pursuing large-scale infrastructure development.

“I am 72 years old, and I was a member of the Brahmaputra Flood Control team in the 1970s. Since then, I have been in favour of mega dams to control floods and support irrigation,” Ering said.

Speaking about the proposed SUMP, which is planned to generate around 11,000 MW or more of power, the MLA stressed the importance of conducting a Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) to assess the project's potential and implications.

He urged people to allow the preliminary assessment to proceed so that they could better understand the potential of the Siang River and the project's possible benefits and challenges.

Ering's remarks come amid ongoing discussions over the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, particularly regarding its potential role in hydropower generation, flood management and water security, alongside concerns about seismic safety, environmental impacts and the displacement of local communities.
