Kiren Rijiju's safety advice for tourists: "Walk on frozen lakes with experienced people, drive carefully"

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on January 5 advised tourists to walk on frozen lakes with experienced people and drive carefully on slippery snow roads while visiting Arunachal Pradesh, which experiences heavy snowfall during winter.

Reacting on the incident at Sela Pass where tourists got stuck in frozen Sela lake after the ice cracked beneath the lake, Kiren Rijiju wrote on X, "in Arunachal Pradesh. My advice to tourists: Walk on the Frozen Lakes with experienced people, drive carefully on slippery snow roads and be aware of snow avalanche. Temperatures is freezing so wear warm clothes and enjoy. Your safety is important

Instagram user Farhad, who witnessed the incident, shared. "The beauty of Sela Lake is mesmerizing, but it hides dangers beneath the surface. I saw people venturing out onto the lake, and the ice began to crack under their feet. Thankfully, I managed to pull them out with help from others. This experience reminded me how crucial it is to prioritize safety."

Farhad's post further urged tourists to exercise caution, emphasizing the importance of leading by example in emergency situations. "Good things start with you," he reflected.

Locals and experienced guides have long cautioned against walking on frozen lakes in the region, as the thickness of the ice can be deceptive. Despite repeated warnings, many tourists underestimate the risks. In light of the recent incident, the local administration has reiterated its advisory, urging visitors to prioritize their safety and heed the advice of guides and officials.
