‘No Siang Dam’: Arunachal activist demands release of anti-SUMP protesters, opposes security deployment
Arunachal Pradesh activist and engineer Katon Moyong, popularly known as ‘Abor Man’, has reiterated his opposition to the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), demanded the immediate release of those arrested during anti-dam protests and questioned the deployment of security forces in the region.
Moyong warned that the presence of security personnel would not deter people from opposing the project and could instead intensify public anger.
He maintained that no discussion on the proposed project should take place without the consent of all 60 village councils, underlining the need for community approval before any decision is taken.
Questioning the government's approach, Moyong alleged that successive governments had attempted to push the project through different narratives. He also raised questions about the benefits of large hydropower projects for local communities.
Calling for unity among Arunachal Pradesh's 26 tribes, the activist urged people to come together against the proposed dam. He also called for political change through the 2029 Assembly elections.
Reiterating his stand, Moyong declared, “No Siang Dam.”
His remarks come amid continuing opposition to the proposed project and protests over its implementation in the Siang region. The allegations and positions expressed by Moyong reflect his statements and have not been independently verified.
