Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Sela Tunnel project in Arunachal Pradesh on March 9. The foundation of this project was laid in February 2019.
During his visit, PM Modi will also inaugurate 20 other projects. The Sela Tunnel project, completed at a cost of Rs 825 crore, is a significant infrastructure development.
Located on the Tezpur-Tawang road in Arunachal Pradesh at an elevation of 13,000 feet, the tunnel provides year-round access to the Tawang region. The Border Road Organisation (BRO) executed the Sela Tunnel project, which includes two tunnels and a connecting road. Tunnel 1 is a single-tube structure covering 980 meters, while Tunnel 2 is 1,555 meters long with one bi-lane tube for traffic and another for emergency services. A 1,200-meter-long road connects these tunnels.
The Sela Tunnel project, initiated in 2019, aims to provide three crucial benefits. It ensures year-round accessibility to forward areas, significantly cuts travel time between Tezpur and Tawang by more than an hour, and provides a safer alternative route by circumventing the hazardous snow-covered Sela top, located at a height of 13,700 feet.
Important construction milestones for the project include the first blast for Tunnel 1 in January 2021, with the final blast for the 980-meter tunnel occurring in January 2022. Subsequently, a successful breakthrough blast for Tunnel 2 was accomplished in October 2021.
