Theft at Kinmay Monastery raises security concerns in Arunachal’s Tawang
A theft has been reported at the revered Kinmay Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district, raising fresh concerns over security in the region. According to sources, an unidentified individual allegedly entered the monastery premises and stole cash and other valuable items.
The incident has caused concern among local residents and community leaders, particularly as similar theft-related cases have been reported in the district in the past. Locals claim that in several earlier incidents, the accused were identified as outsiders, prompting questions over security arrangements and monitoring mechanisms.
Community members have expressed apprehension that inadequate verification of individuals entering and residing in the district may be contributing to the rise in such incidents. Some local leaders have stressed the need for increased vigilance, calling for a balance between compassion and responsibility while ensuring strict adherence to legal procedures.
Reacting to the incident, a local publication urged the district administration to strengthen enforcement of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system by reopening the Jang Police check gate for thorough verification. The publication has also appealed to Gaon Burahs (GBs) across villages to conduct proper ILP checks of residents within their jurisdictions.
Residents have warned that failure to enforce stricter monitoring and legal entry norms could result in an increase in criminal activities and other serious incidents. Many have appealed to the authorities to take timely and decisive action to protect the cultural, religious, and social fabric of Tawang.
Meanwhile, the district administration has not yet issued an official statement on the theft or the demands raised by locals.
