GUWAHATI: Today is the last day of campaigning for the first phase of elections in both Assam and West Bengal following the Election Commission’s guidelines to bind up election campaigning 48 hours before the close of polls.
The election campaign in 47 constituencies under Phase I will come to an end at 6 pm on March 25, 2021.
Polling will take place in the first phase on 47 constituencies in a total of 12 districts in the Upper Assam.

A total of 269 candidates are in the fray for these 47 seats and a total of 81 lakh voters will determine the fate of 269 political candidates.
Political parties, including the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress, Raijor Dal, All India Trinamool Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad, and other newly floated regional parties and the left front, have gone to great lengths to woo voters.
The NDA and Mahajoth, or a grand alliance, are likely to battle it out for the majority of seats in the first phase.
Regional forces Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and independent Raijor Dal candidates, on the other hand, are expected to contest for some seats.

This phase features chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, state Congress president Ripun Bora, Asom Gana Parishad chief Atul Bora, and Executive President Keshab Mahanta.
Meanwhile, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi will be making their polls debut through this phase.
Several high-profile leaders, including Prime minister Narendra Modi, BJP President J P Nadda, and union ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah, have been seen campaigning in this phase.
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Chattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel were among the senior Congress leaders who campaigned for their candidates.
On the other hand, polling in West Bengal will cover 30 constituencies in a total of five districts in the state.
A total of 191 candidates are in the fray for these 30 seats.
Assembly elections in both Assam and West Bengal will take place from March 27.
