GUWAHATI: Around 1.5 lakh front line healthcare, ASHA and anganwadi workers will become the first from Assam to get COVID-19 vaccine shots, Health Officials have informed.

These 1.5 lakh workers, leading the fight against the Covid-19 from the frontlines, have registered through the Co-WIN app.

Yesterday, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that DCGI’s approval for the emergency use of Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin has raised the hopes for a "COVID-19 free India." Biswa Sarma said that police and teachers will be the next in line to receive shots.

Sarma further added that once the dry runs are complete, the jabs will be rolled out by the Government. Earlier, the Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan had said that the vaccines will be free of cost for all the states.

“In the third phase, the vulnerable section with co-morbidities will be third in line to receive the vaccine shots," Biswa Sarma said.

The Minister has credited the "determined and decisive leadership" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India developing an indigenous vaccine.

vaccine. A GREAT & GLORIOUS Day for us," the Minister wrote in a tweet yesterday.

It needs mention here that the drugs regulatory authority gave the green light to the jabs developed by AstraZeneca with Oxford University and by local firm Bharat Biotech. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it "a decisive turning point". India plans to inoculate some 300 million people on a priority list this year.
