A group of 12 students from Assam has resigned from the newly formed Northeast wing of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) wing in New Delhi over the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill.
The students hailing from Assam were pursuing their higher studies in Delhi and had joined a 17-member Northeast wing of the ABVP. They unanimously decided to resign after students of ABVP took out a rally in Guwahati in support of the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Speaking with Inside Northeast, General Secretary of the ABVP Northeast Cell, Delhi Pradesh, Sheikh Raisha Tabassum, said, “When the Assam Cell of the ABVP took out a rally in support of the Citizenship Amendment Bill, we felt humiliated. We can’t even express to what extent we felt the humiliation. Therefore, after having a word with our High Command, we decided to quit as a mark to protest the CAB.”
Raisha added that she, along with the other 11 executives, resigned over the contentious Bill. “For the betterment of Assam, we cannot support the CAB,” she said.

It may be mentioned here that for the first time, a Northeast Cell was formed by the ABVP for the betterment of the students belonging to the Northeast region. After the twelve students from Assam resigned from the wing, it is now left with just five members in the newly formed Northeast-centric ABVP arm.
Raisha further opined that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was making an even bigger mistake than the National Register of Citizens (NRC) by bringing in the CAB. “You cannot even imagine how drastic the consequences will be once it is implemented. What is the use of students like us who are staying away from home and toiling hard for the future of our state? If we can’t do anything for our own state, then our education will be pointless,” said the GS.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill has become one of the most controversial moves of the Government and has been heavily frowned upon by the indigenous people of the Northeast region.
The resignation of the twelve Assamese students from the Northeast Cell of the ABVP has added further steam to the countless protests and opposition of the Citizenship Bill that aims to provide citizenship to Sikhs, Jains, Christians, Parsis and other religious minority groups excluding Muslims. The minority groups belong to Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
