Guwahati, February 5, 2019:

The Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad has called a 12-hours Assam Bandh on February 9 to demand the scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 and allotment of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the six indigenous communities of Assam which includes the Tai-Ahom, Chutiya, Moran, Muttock, Koch-Rajbonghsis, and tea tribes.

It may be mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to arrive in the state on that very day to take part in what has been announced as the “largest rally ever seen in Assam.”

Modi is bringing a slew of big-ticket announcements to the North East when he will address the mega rally at Amingaon at the outskirts of Guwahati,  laying the foundation stone of a new Brahmaputra bridge and participate in the Bhumi Puja for a proposed AIIMS in the state.

Many of the leaders protesting the implementation of the Citizenship Bill such as KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi have cautioned the Prime Minister that large-scale protests will erupt as soon as he sets foot here.
