Guwahati, December 27, 2019:

In view of ongoing examinations, the Krishak Sramik Unnayan Parishad has called off the 12- hour Assam bandh of December 30. The bandh has been supported by seven other organizations.

The ‘bandh’ has been called with the demand for the release of prominent RTI activist and Akhil Gogoi, who was arrested earlier this month, and the scrapping of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act. Gogoi has now been sent to 14-days judicial custody.

The President of the organization, Pradip Kalita confirmed that the bandh has been called off and said that instead of bandh they will hold district wise sitting demonstration on December 30.

Earlier, the Assam bandh was scheduled on December 27 by the Krishak Sramik Unnayan Parishad. However, it was rescheduled on December 30.

It may be mentioned here that the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader was flown in on Wednesday from New Delhi in a discreet manner and two teams of the NIA officials raided Gogoi’s residence in Guwahati’s Chandmari and Gandhibasti areas respectively.

The officials seized files related to government activities such as the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), a private channel owned by a politician and RTI, besides PAN Card, passbook and other bank details.

Meanwhile, the clamour for Gogoi’s release, who was a prominent leader of the anti-CAA brigade, is growing louder with each passing day. Students from Universities across the nation are also demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the leader. In Assam, the demand for Gogoi’s release has been reiterated by several prominent leaders and politicians, who have claimed that his incarceration is an attempt to silence the voices against the CAA.
