As preliminary investigation into the matter by the Forest Department had taken place, lighting strikes are suspected to be the reason for the death of the elephants.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had also showed his concern over the matter and sent Parimal Shuklabaidya, Minister of Environment and Forests, to the spot to take stock of the matter.

A forest official had informed that the area was very remote and a forest team could reach the spot on Thursday afternoon though the incident took place in the Tuesday night itself.

The exact reason will be known after the post mortem, which to be done on Friday.
