DHUBRI: The Forest department along with Bilasipara Circle officials jointly launched an eviction drive in Sonamukhi Lotea at Tokrabandha Proposed Reserve Forest (PRF) in Dhubri district.

Dipak Chandra Deka, Divisional Forest Officer of Dhubri stated that the eviction drive was conducted jointly with Shantanu Gogoi, Circle Officer, Bilasipara along with a team of police personnel from Bilasipara.

The eviction drive in Sonamukhi Lotea of Tokrabandha Proposed Reserve Forest (PRF), where primarily Bengali-speaking Muslims live, is seen as targeting “illegal encroachers”.

According to authorities, the personnel on Monday evicted 24 families who had “illegally” occupied roughly 5 hectors of forest land. The alleged encroachers tried to protest at the eviction site but they could not show any valid documents and were evicted later.

"Similar drives will be continued in different parts of Dhubri district, illegal encroachers will be root out from the remaining forest lands," said Dipak Chandra Deka, Divisional Forest Officer, Dhubri.
