3 Arrested for Illegally Transporting AK-56 Assault Rifles in Assam

Dibrugarh, June 27, 2019:

Dibrugarh police in Assam have arrested 3 persons (including two women) for illegally transporting Kalashnikov rifles. The police seized two AK-56 assault rifles from them apart from two magazines and army uniforms.

They were arrested from the Mohanbari bypass in Lahowal area in Assam's Dibrugarh district near the Arunachal border. The trio were coming from Dimapur and proceeding to Changlang, Arunachal Pradesh by a Bolero (AS/23-N-0173). One of the arrested is an ex-serviceman of Assam Rifles.

Top brass of the police are grilling the accused to identify the trail of the seized arms.

The operation was jointly carried out by Dibrugarh Police in association with Changlang Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) under Lahoal Police Station, and they intercepted the  Bolero vehicle that was allegedly carrying arms and ammunition at around 9:45 am on Friday.

On conducting search, 3 persons namely Badrul Alom (48), Akuyu Yobin (48), and Sayunu Yobin (36) were nabbed and the following items were recovered from the vehicle: two AK 56 rifles, and two AK 56 magazines.

It may be mentioned that the Type 56 is a Chinese 7.62×39mm assault rifle. It is a variant of the Soviet-designed AK-47 assault rifles. Production started in 1956 at State Factory 66 but was eventually handed over to Norinco, who continues to manufacture the rifle primarily for export purposes.
