GUWAHATI: Assam Panchayat and Rural development Minister Ranjit Kumar Dass on Monday stated that 304 village panchayat and councils are free from COVID-19.
Even though COVID-19 has affected mostly the urban areas, the virus has reached the far flung areas of the rural belt during its second wave.
The Minister stated that he is hopeful that the entire rural belt of Assam will be COVID-free soon with the cooperation and active participation of everyone.

The P&RD department has set up war rooms in the Gaon Panchayats to contain the spread of the virus.
“Assam has a total 2,197 numbers of Gaon Panchayats and 479 numbers of VCDCs/VDCs (KAAC – 40 VDCs, DHC – 28 VDCs, BTAD – 411 VCDCs) under the Sixth Scheduled districts. To curb the spread of COVID-19 in the rural areas, the Gaon Panchayats and VCDCs/VDCs which are the cutting-edge institutions, have been geared up to fight against COVID-19 in rural areas”, the Minister said.
He further added that war rooms have been helpful in monitoring COVID patients in the panchayat areas restrict their movements till they recover.
These war rooms manage the data of COVID patients availing home isolation, Institutional quarantine or hospitalization in all the GPs, VCDCs and VDCs.
“In response to my appeal, three ministers, two MPs and 40 MLAs and four autonomous council members participated in the events and turned the initiatives of the P&RD department into a true ‘jan andolan’,” he added.
The minister further informed that free masks are being distributed to vulnerable groups and the weaker section of the society.
