The film festival will be opened with a screening of the film Charcoal (Komur) by Esmaeel Monsef. During the week-long festival at two venues – Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra and Jyoti Chitaban - around 100 films will be screened.

Legendary Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Zanussi will be attending the Guwahati International Film Festival as the chief guest at the opening ceremony of the festival.

The week-long festival is being organised by Assam government-owned Jyoti Chitraban in association with the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film and Television Institute.
Iran is the focus country in this edition of the film festival. Acclaimed Iranian film "Charcoal" will be showcased during the inaugural ceremony. The categories of movies to be showcased during the week-long fest include 150 years of Gandhi, a retro of Zanussi, North East Kaleidoscope among others.
