5 Assam Rifles honored for role in Dalai Lama's escape to India in 1959

The 5th Battalion of the Assam Rifles has been recognized for their pivotal role in escorting His Holiness the Dalai Lama to safety during his escape from Tibet to India in 1959. This historic event, which unfolded amidst the backdrop of the Tibetan Rebellion against Chinese occupation, remains a poignant chapter in the shared history of India and Tibet.

In a daring escape, His Holiness and his family fled Lhasa on March 17, 1959, eventually reaching Lhuntse Dzong just a few days' march from the India-Tibet border.
