GUWAHATI: An elderly woman was charred to death when her hut caught fire at Hatisila in Kharghuli area here today.
Latasil Police Station officer in-charge Binay Kalita said the economically backward 87-year-old, identified as Dhanamaya Biswakarma, used to live alone in the hut made of bamboo in a pitiable condition. Police suspect that the hut caught fire when she tried to light a fire to cook her meal.
She reportedly could not escape the fire due to her physical weakness.
By the time police reached the scene in Kharghuli around 8 am, the woman had already lost her life and all her belongings were found to be gutted.
In a similar incident, two minors were charred to death at Nayanagar village under Gossaigaon subdivision of Kokrajhar district of Assam on Tuesday.
The children, identified as Archina Kisku, 4, and Moniram Hembram, 5, were playing near their house when a nearby heap of dry jute caught fire around 11 am.
Efforts by the family members and neighbours to douse the flames proved futile and neither could they rescue the children.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal condoled their demise in his official Twitter handle stating: "Deeply anguished to learn about the fire at Kasugaon, Gossaigaon, which resulted in the death of two children - Arshina Kisku and Maniram Hembrom. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved parents and family members.”
