The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has announced a series of protests against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The AASU, which is best known for leading the six-year ‘Assam Movement’ (1979-1985) against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, plans to roll for a fresh bout of agitation against the Bill from January 31.
As per AASU’s official statement, a statewide torchlight rally is to be staged on January 31 by the AASU-led anti-CAB united non-political front.
Moreover, the AASU has also announced to stage a 10-hour statewide hunger protest from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm on February 4.
It may also be noted that AASU staged a statewide national highway blockade on Tuesday in reaction to the thrashing of arrested AASU activists by BJP inside a police station in Assam’s Nalbari town.
