Guwahati, February 12, 2019:

A delegation of the North East Students’ Organization (NESO) on Tuesday met Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma over tabulation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

Addressing the media, All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Chief Advisor and NESO advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said, “We have met the Meghalaya CM. Right now, the BJP government is trying their best to pass the Bill in the Rajya Sabha today. They have announced that they intend to pass the Bill on February 12, so they will try their best to push it through. We have been asking different political parties to oppose the Bill since it was passed in the Lok Sabha forcefully and even before that. For the sake of Northeast, they must oppose the Bill. “

“The BJP led Central government has forcefully passed the Bill in Lok Sabha by accepting a partial report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee. They have broken all the rules and have scheduled the Bill to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha at midnight. Moreover, the martyr's family of the Assam agitation has returned back their mementos offered to them by the government and even Tez Hazarika has refused to accept the Bharat Ratna announced to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika which is nothing but the sign of disagreement with the government's decision,” he added.
