DULIAJAN: After what Samujjal Bhattacharya said on the third day of the 4-day Convention of the All Assam Students' Union al Duliajan, there seems to be no doubt that he is indeed exiting Assam's largest student union.

Before Samujjal Bhattacharya was about to deliver his speech, AASU members launched into slogans urging the Chief Adviser to stay back and not to resign. Seeing the impassioned pleas, the AASU leader became emotional for a long time and after regaining his composure, said the following words: "The gamusa I use to wipe my tears, I forgot at my home."

Bhattacharya's words have a sense of finality -- as if this truly is the end of his illustrious tenure of the influential student body. At least that is how those in attendance during the delivery of this iconic line -- perceive it.

Meanwhile, President Dipanka Nath and General Secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi are all set to discard their AASU robes before diving headlong into active politics.

A source at the AASU Convention, which entered its third day today, said that Gogoi and Nath's resignation is all but confirmed. "It is almost certain that Lurinjyoti Gogoi is going to join politics and contest in the Assembly elections of 2021 as a candidate."

Lurin and Nath are likely to join the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) -- formed as an offshoot of the AASU and fellow regional student body Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP). Both organizations were front and centre during the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act which rocked Assam last winter.

During the protests, there was a consensus from some sections of the public that there should be a political alternative to the saffron BJP party, which currently rules in Dispur with two of its allies -- Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF).
