Congress Stands with the Bangladeshi Muslims, Whereas BJP is for Bangladeshi Hindus: AASU Leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi

All Assam Student's Union (AASU) General Secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Wednesday launched an attack at the BJP party over allegations that the AASU is allied with the Congress party.

Speaking to Inside Northeast, Lurin alleged that there is no difference between the Congress and BJP. "While one party stands for the interests of the illegal Muslims, the other is furthering the interests of the illegal Hindu Bangladeshis."

In regards to the BJP's allegations that the AASU leadership has been hobnobbing with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, he alleged that the current Chief Minister and BJP leader Sarbananda Sonowal had been seen with Sonia Gandhi during his AASU days. "Ask the Chief Minister why he took photographs with Sonia Gandhi when he was President", he said.

The AASU leader also alleged that the leaders of the student body are not allied with any religion or political group. "We do not differentiate between foreigners on the basis of religion -- foreigner is foreigner", he said.

Reacting to BJP leader Mominul Awal's allegations that the AASU has welcomed the inclusion of the illegal Bangladeshis in the final NRC draft, he said that the BJP minority leader has spoken 'nonsense' and he has lost his bearings. "He has become confused as he is getting on in years", he said.

The AASU leader further alleged that the BJP party is trying to rid themselves of a faulty NRC after things did not go according to plan, despite being in power. "A person with even very little knowledge knows that the Government is responsible for this, not the Supreme Court. This is why the BJP has been trying to wipe their hands clean", he added.

He further queried why the BJP party have not filed objections and asked why they kept mum. "Why did they not send these cases of the known Bangladeshis to the Foreigners' Tribunals?", he further queried. "Why were these Bangladeshis not deprived of citizenship and voting rights?", he asked, further adding, "in the past year, they sent only 75 names to the NRC authorities".

This war-of-words between the current AASU leadership and the former leader of the party, Sonowal, is quite intriguing. Only time will tell where it leads to, but the gloves have certainly come off on both sides.
