Guwahati, December 17, 2019:

All Assam Students' Union (AASU) leader Samujjal Bhattacharya on Tuesday demanded the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to immediately scrap the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act.

Speaking to mediapersons from Latasil, the venue of the student body's gana Satyagraha, Bhattacharya stated, "Since the Prime Minister has stated that he supports non-violent and democratic movements against the C(A)A, he should put his words into action by scrapping the C(A)A."

The student leader further opined that the Central leadership is attempting to dominate and divide the people of the State in an attempt to stomp out the protests, ever since the very controversial Bill was enacted as a law. "We don't want CAA. We won't accept injustice

Your Ministers are trying to dominate us and divide us and we won't stand for it",

Reacting to Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's press conference yesterday, in which he had claimed that the unions had met the Union Home Ministry, and the doorway to dialogue with the Centre is still open, Himanta said, "Our terms (to the Home Ministry) were not met -- we were not given justice. And within 24 hours of the talks, the C(A)A was passed.

Calling for peace over violence, the AASU Chief Adviser added that students of the State will study and, at the same time, the protests will continue. "People have come out from all walks of life and these protests will continue until the amendment to the Citizenship Act is rolled back", Bhattacharya said.
