The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) will organize a 10-hour Hunger Strike on Saturday at the Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) to protest against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Speaking to Inside Northeast, the AASU's Chief Advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya confirmed that the strike will begin at 6 am in the morning, and will end at 4 pm in the afternoon.

Today, the AASU leaders joined a massive rally at the Latashil Playground in Guwahati city, where they led cries against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Somewhat surprisingly, prominent actor Jatin Bora, who was a member of the BJP party, cast off his saffron robes and joined in the protest. “The people are our Gods”, proclaimed Jatin, and proceeded to shout slogans against the ruling Government along with fellow industry mates Barsha Rani Bishaya, Ravi Sarma, among others.

The mass protest was organized amid imposition of a curfew and shutdown of mobile internet services in the city, and the droves headed to Latasil as if on autopilot. Apart from the mega-rally in the historic field, that was also the site of a Bajraninad (thunder cry) against the Bill, earlier this year, thousands staged isolated protests in several pockets of the city.

The protest was joined by all, irrespective of caste, gender, and sex. With the massive protests that have been sparked in the region against the Bill, the ball is now fully in Delhi’s Court.
