The All Assam Students Union (AASU) along with several other organizations staged a state wide torch march against the proposed controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, on Friday.
Hundreds of protestors participated in the march against the bill. The protestors demanded the government to withdraw the bill immediately.
It is to be mentioned that the day witnessed day-long protest by the 70 organizations of Assam led by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) against the bill. Thousands of protestors joined the protest from Sadiya to Dhubri and many were arrested midway.
Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader, Akhil Gogoi said that the people of Assam will throw the BJP-led government into the Brahmaputra if they pass the “anti-Assamese”Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
Speaking to InsideNE, Akhil Gogoi said, “The 1.9 crore Hindu Bangladeshis that will come to Assam after the Bill is passed will destroy the Assamese cultures and bring the Assamese language to a stage of extinctions. No one in the state should support the bill and each responsible Assamese should press the government to dump the bill.”
Gogoi added, “In order to let the government know that the people of Assam stand united against the anti-Assamese bill, we organised the Sankalp Sikha Yatra. The government even tried to obstruct the protest by imposing section 144 CrPC but they failed as a massive number of people came to protest against the government’s step to bring in more Hindu Bangladeshis.”
Gogoi further said that the government has completely failed as they did not stand to their commitments they made to the people of Assam.
He stated, “The government must withdraw the bill or else they will face the wrath of the people. We will throw the government into the Brahmaputra if they pass the bill. The government needs to know that the Hindu Bangladeshis won’t Assam by any means.”
He claimed that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 is just another issue that is targeted to make an impact among the Bengali community as well as West Bengal but it seems to be backfiring. Even the Bengalis who love Assam have opposed the bill.
