Guwahati, August 20, 2019:

In a move that is sure to spark controversy, the Boro language has been left out of the (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) CTET as a language subject. This has drawn the ire of many leading figures of the community, including members of the All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU).

This is indeed shocking as some of the lesser spoken languages have been included in the list. Garo, Khasi of Meghalaya, Mizo of Mizoram have been included as subjects, but the Boro language has been left out despite being an 8th schedule language.

Reacting to this, ABSU leader Pramod Boro said, "This is 'unconstitutional' and 'illegal'. Some people behind-the-scenes have hatched a conspiracy to deprive the Boro community, which is unfortunate, as languages should all be respected. We have witnessed that many unscheduled languages are getting recognition, but the Boros are being deprived in this regard."

The exclusion of Boro comes at a very sensitive time as the demand for a separate Bodoland is already gaining momentum after the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

Recently, representatives of the following Boro organizations: the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), National Democratic Front of Boroland Progressive NDFB (P), People’s Joint Action Committee for Boroland Movement (PJACBM) and people of proposed Bodoland area as a whole, wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with a set of demands, including the carving out of a separate Bodoland, which has been a long-standing demand of the community.

The Bodo representatives stated that the basis for creating new States/Union Territories should be to help the local people live safer, happier and more fulfilling lives and urged the Government to create the State of Bodoland in order to protect the identity and culture of the indigenous Bodo people.
