The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), at its 52nd Annual Convention, held at Serfanguri from 21,23 December, reiterated the demand for a separate state Bodoland.
The student body urged upon the Government of India to resolve the issue without further ado and resolved to continue the mass movements if the Government does not take a policy decision at the political level for permanent solution of the Bodoland issue.
The ABSU also demanded political rights for the Bodos living outside the proposed Bodoland area and Hills Tribe status to the Bodos living in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.
The ABSU also appealed the Government of India and all the state Government of North East India to expedite the peace talks in an "earnest manner for an ever lasting peace in the region."
The house decided to welcome the state cabinet decision to fulfill the long standing demands of different ethnic communities including Creation of Autonomous and development councils for ethnic communities of Assam. At the same time, the student body has resolved to continue opposing the granting of ST Status to 6 communities.
The ABSU also resolved to appeal the Government of India to formulate National State Reorganization Policy on urgent basis to fulfill the aspirations for New States in various parts of the country under the provisions of Article 2 and 3 of the constitution of India.
This resolution has been adopted in view of the wide spread disparity in the field of socio-economic development, language, Literature, culture, identity, land and political rights caused due to large sizes of the Indian states. The house cited example of United States of America, which is one of the most advanced country in the world that has only 1/6 population compared to India but has 50 states.
