Guwahati, March 13, 2019:

Senior advocate Upamanyu Hazarika on Wednesday has criticized the AGP’s decision to reunite with the BJP. Hazarika said: “The election eve alliance of AGP and BJP amply proves that politics is only about self-preservation of leaders who are in public life far beyond their expiry date. AGP was reduced to a 3.8% vote share in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and got a fresh lease of life with BJP alliance in 2016. They’ve again proven why the people of Assam had rightly rejected them earlier.”

Hazarika also alleged that the reunion by both parties is a last-ditch effort to stay afloat in the Northeast political sphere, as their “political boats are sinking”. “For the BJP the Citizenship Amendment Bill is the sole instrument to preserve indigenous identity, by bringing in additional foreigners and not throw out the existing. Both realize that their political boats are sinking and alliance only proves that they want to sink together. It’s a tragedy for the indigenous people of Assam that the parties we chose to protect our interests, their leaders are only interested in selfish self-preservation and no thought or action on what needs to be done to protect the indigenous from becoming a minority”, he added.

Hazarika has also alleged that the AGP-BJP alliance was never over, which is proven by the AGP leaders resuming duties as Ministers despite not undergoing an oath-taking ceremony. “We should change the Assam Agitation slogan of ‘aa oi aa ulai aah Bidexi khed’ (come, come out, chase out foreigners) to ‘aa oi aa ulai aah Bodonok khed’ (come, come out, chase out (CM) Sonowal”, he said.

It is to be mentioned that Hazarika will contest as an independent from candidate Guwahati Lok Sabha Constituency.
