AGP Leader Atul Bora Continues Drama of 'Standing for the People' of AssamAGP

Guwahati, December 21, 2019:

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) President Atul Bora on Saturday stated that his party has approached the Union Home Minister Amit Shah with a set of demands to "protect" the people of the State amid the unrest over the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Addressing the press here today, Bora said that the region's largest regional party is still embroiled in a struggle to ensure that Assam is kept out of the purview of the CAA.

"Today, the people of Assam are expressing fears about losing their language, we will see to it that it is preserved", said Bora, who has been facing increasing scrutiny over his stand (or lack thereof) regarding the C(A)A.

Secondly, Bora said that the AGP party will appeal the Government so that the Land Policy that is implemented will protect the claim of the indigenous upon the soil.

The regional party's leader also added that he will recommend the granting of ST status to the six agitating communities of the State.

Bora also stated that he had demanded Shah that 90 % seats should be reserved in the Parliament for the indigenous people of Assam.

The AGP leader also stated that their demand for Inner Line Permit (ILP) was rebuffed by the Home Minister, who claimed that it might hamper the Government's 'Act East' policy.

At the same time, Bora, defending him of accusations of being 'two-faced', accosted the Congress party of bringing 'foreigners' to Assam, and pointed to it as the reason for the 6-year-old Assam Agitation.

It may be mentioned here that at a time when the entire state of Assam, along with the rest of the country, is protesting against the contentious amendment of the Act, Bora's party has been caught napping. Even though the leader has recently come out in opposition to the Bill-turned-Act, it is being speculated that it is the direct result of 'pressure' exerted on the regional party, which is part of the ruling coalition with the ruling BJP party.
