The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Tuesday reiterated that if the-BJP led central government gives settlement to the “Hindu Bangladeshis” by passing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, it will sever its ties with the saffron party.
“If the Citizenship Bill is passed then we will no longer carry on with our alliance with the BJP,” AGP general secretary Ramendra Narayan Kalita told reporters.
He said the AGP stood opposed to the Bill as it, if passed, would give citizenship status to Hindu Bangladeshis and other non-Muslim refugees who came to India before December 31, 2014.
“Assam will not take the burden of any foreigner who came before March 24, 1971,” he added.
