Guwahati, January 30, 2019:

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has staged statewide protests against the amendment of the controversial Citizenship Bill, 2016. The protest has been supported by Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and other indigenous organizations of the state.

Thousands of supporters of the AGP were joined by members of the political party as they moved onto the streets collectively raising their voices against the “Jaati Dhwangkhi” Bill that seeks to give citizenship to the Non-Muslim people from the countries Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh who have moved into the state post-1971.

The AGP has reached out to its base in almost all the districts to stage protests, namely: Tinsukia, Pathsala, Nalbari, Nagaon, Hajo, Rangia, etc.

It may be mentioned that Assam’s largest regional party moved out of the alliance and have since lent their voices to protests against the Bill. The Bill has been passed in the Lok Sabha and is likely to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha session on January 31, after it was delayed due to loud protests by the opposition members.
