BOKAJAN: Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Ahongbam Bemthoi Chanu, one of the most prominent faces of the Manipuri community in Assam, who was posted at the Bokajan Subdivision of the Karbi Anglong district as a Magistrate, passed away today following kidney and liver failure.

According to reports, Chanu's health deteriorated two days ago, following which she was admitted to a hospital in Nagaland.

After doctors informed her family that her health condition was worsening, a decision was taken to take her to Chennai via air ambulance for further treatment. However, Chanu breathed her last before she could be airlifted.

Known as an honest and dedicated officer, Chanu cracked the Assam Civil Service Examination conducted by the Assam Public Service Commission in the year 2015 and secured 59th position. Chanu was married to Okram Prasanta Singh, an RTI activist based in Guwahati, Assam.

Ahongbam Bemthoi Chanu was one of the very few among the Manipuris residing in Assam who cracked the Assam Civil Service Examination conducted by Assam Public Service Commission.

Chanu passed her HSLC Examination in the third division from Assapalli English School, Fulertal, Lakhipu under Secondary Board of Assam (SEBA). She completed her twelfth standard from Nehru Higher Secondary School, Pailapool, Lakhipur under Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) in 2003.

She passed BA (English Honours) by securing second class from Nehru College, Pailapool under Assam University, Silchar in 2006. She passed MA in English securing a First class second position from Gauhati University in 2009.
