GUWAHATI: The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council today postponed the Higher secondary final examination which was scheduled to held on May 1, in view of the surge in COVID-19 cases.

The notification signed under the name of Pankaj Borthakur, Controller of Examinations read that the dates for the examination had been postponed until further notice.

Earlier today, The Board of Secondary Education (SEBA) also had postponed the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Assam High Madrassa examinations, which were scheduled to be held on May 11 as well.

All the exam dates will be announced once the COVID-19 situation of the state will under the control.

Earlier, the government had issued a notification to the district authorities to close down educational institutes if the COVID-19 caseload reaches 100 per day in the concerned districts.

In the past month, Dibrugarh University had also postponed all of its examinations due to spike in COVID-19 cases and asked its students to vacate hostels.

Assam recorded 4,489 positive cases of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, pushing the tally in the state to 2,63,450.

The positivity rate of Assam now stands at 8.02 per cent.

Assam recorded 29 COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 1,389.

Of the new cases, Kamrup (M) reported 1,645 cases, followed by Dibrugarh 460, Kamrup 239, Nagaon 201 and Nalbari 201.
