GUWAHATI: Assam’s chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that Badruddin Ajmal's AIUDF has a greater probability of forming the government than peasant leader Akhil Gogoi.
Biswa Sarma made the comment reacting to Sivasagar MLA Akhil's claim that his party will form the government after the next Assembly elections in 2026.
“Definitely, everybody has the right to form the government. CIP (M), CIP (I), AIUDF are all saying that. However, on this day and date, the AIUDF has a greater chance of forming the government,’ Sarma said. “They (AIUDF) are getting a greater share of the votes as Badruddin Ajmal has received more votes compared to Akhil.”

Asked about Akhil’s claim that he would not have allowed the BJP to return to power, Biswa Sarma said: “The ‘me’ word is very bad. If he had said if they were outside, it would have sounded better. The rest is his opinion. Maybe yes, if he was outside, maybe a different result would have come. How can I say -- only God will know.”
In the recently concluded Assembly election, the Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal only won a single Seat -- the one won by Gogoi himself -- out of the 29 it contested in total. It had allied with the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) -- a party backed by student bodies AASU and AJYCP.
The Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) had a far more impressive showing, winning 16 Seats in total. Somewhat surprisingly, it was not too far behind its senior ally Congress, which bagged 29 Seats.
