EXCLUSIVE: AIUDF General Secretary arrested for Pro-Taliban post on social media

GUWAHATI: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) General Secretary Maulana Fazul Karim was arrested by Assam Police today in a case related to sharing posts on social media supporting the Taliban taking over Afghanistan.

Maulana Fazul Karim is also the Secretary of Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind's Assam state unit, of which AIUDF Chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal is State President as well.

This is was confirmed to InsideNE by Sushanta Biswa Sarma, Darrang district Superintendent of Police, from where Maulana Fazul Karim was apprehended.

Veteran Assam scribe Haider Hussain reacted to this incident strongly and said, "These people are the real enemies of Islam. Where Afghani people are opposing Taliban taking over their country, want to leave their own homeland, and seeking refuge in foreign countries, why are these people (arrested) have to support the Taliban? Islam teaches peace, not violence."

Meanwhile, the Assam Civil Society has also condemned the act of showing support towards the Taliban through social media and appreciated the Assam Police for their quick action.

The Assam Police have arrested as many as 14 persons across the state for posting pro-Taliban contents on social media.

The arrested people are identified as – Maulana Fazul Karim (49) from Darrang, Abu Bakkar Sidique (55) and Saidul Hoque (29) from Kamrup (Rural), Jawed Mazumder from Cachar, Mozidul Islam (25), and Faruk Hussain Khan (32) from Barpeta, Saiyad Ahmed (27) and Arman Hussain (25) from Dhubri, Nadim Akhtar (23) from Hailakandi, Khandakar Nur Alom from South Salmara, Maulana Yaseen Khan (26) from Goalpara, Maulana Basiruddin Laskar (65) from Hojai and Mujib Uddin with Mortuza Hussain Khan from Karimganj.

Reportedly, among the arrested persons there are students from Tezpur Medical College, Maulanas, and working teachers as well who work with some media groups as reporters too.

The accused are booked under the IT Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, and various sections of CrPC.
