Guwahati, August 31, 2019:

An All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA, Ananta Kumar Malo, has been excluded from the final NRC draft published earlier today. His name is among 19 lakh names which have been lift out of the NRC.

Apart from Malo, his grandson and son's names have also been excluded from the final NRC draft, according to sources.

Malo represents the Abhayapuri (South) Assembly Constituency of Assam, which falls under the Barpeta Lok Sabha Constituency.

In 2016, Balo won the election by winning 51,525 votes (his nearest competitor, Congress' Chandan Kumar Sarkar, won 51,334 votes). The AIUDF is the second most powerful party in the State (after the Congress).

This has left many people bewildered as a legislator being left out of the NRC raises serious questions about the legal procedures being undertaken to verify the eligibility of political candidates.

After publication of the NRC, Prateek Hajela, the State Coordinator, NRC said, “A total of 3,11,21,004 persons have been found eligible for inclusion in final draft, leaving out 19,06,657 persons, including those who did not submit their claims.

“Those not satisfied with outcome can file appeals before the Foreigners Tribunals”, Hajela added.

It may be mentioned here that the NRC authority has declared that the non-inclusion of a person’s name in the NRC does not amount to his/her being declared a foreigner. Moreover, every individual kept out of the final NRC can appeal to the Foreigners’ Tribunal (FT). The time limit for filing appeals on FTs has been increased from 60-120 days.
