GUWAHATI: Amid reports that Congress MLA Ajanta Neog will be joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the senior leader has been expelled from the primary membership of the party.

It needs mention here that rumours of Neog's joining the BJP are rife ever since she held a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and NEDA Convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma behind closed doors.

Yesterday, the Congress party had urged the former Cabinet Minister to "clarify her position" in regards to the media reports speculating about her shifting political base to the rival BJP camp.
"The reports of your plans to join the BJP that have been circulating for around 2 months now have confused us," Assam Congress President Ripun Bora said in a letter, before exhorting the Golaghat MLA to "clarify her stand" regarding her stance on the matter.
At the same time, senior Congressmen, such as Pradyut Bordoloi, have appealed the MLA to "reconsider her decision" to shift to the rival party ahead of the polls. Apart from Neog, several others, including fellow MLA Roselina Tirkey, are said to be lining up to join the ruling party ahead of the elections
