GUWAHATI: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has moved the Election Commission of India (ECI) demanding the installation of IPCCTV cameras in every strong room to tighten security and safety at the earliest convenience.

The move comes after allegations and apprehensions surfaced that the safety and security of the EVMs in the polling stations of the second phase of the Assam assembly elections during storage in the strong rooms.

They demanded the installation of CCTVs so that the same could be watched by each and every candidate from a distance or from home and office and be satisfied that the EVMs are in safe custody.

In a press release issued by the AJP, it said: “We are aware that Honorable Election Commission of India usually takes all possible steps for safety and security of strong rooms where polled EVMs are stored. The Commission also allows physical monitoring of the strong rooms by representatives of the candidates. But, despite that, there are allegations and apprehensions about the safety and security of the polled EVMs during storage in the strong rooms.”

Besides that, the other reason for demanding the same is that between the conclusion of the referendum and the date of the counting, there is a significant time gap, the released added.
