GUWAHATI: Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) President Lurin Jyoti Gogoi today launched a scathing attack on the BJP over its resolve to hand over land pattas to over 1 lakh families in the state.
"Over 4.75 lakh families are still landless -- in their 4 years of rule, they have not given them land. At the same time, the villagers of Laika-Dodhia villages are deprived of land. Their plight has continued for over 21 years and they have been protesting in adverse condition," Gogoi said today, adding, "They have not been able to give land to the people; the PM's coming here to give land pattas will be an act of betrayal."
"To hand over land pattas is not a big deal. At best, it is a responsibility of a Circle officer; not the PM," said AJP General Secretary Jagadish Bhuyan.
The AJP has decided to throw its weight behind the agitation staged by over 1400 ‘homeless’ families of Laika and Dodhia villages.

It needs mention here that the members of AJP will stage a state-wide sit-in demonstration on January 21 demanding permanent settlement of the residents of the two villages under Dibru Saikhowa National Park in Upper Assam.
It may be mentioned that several hundreds of protesters belonging to the villages are camping at Lezaihola Borguri in Tinsukia town for the past month now.
Amid fervid electioneering for polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will land in Assam on January 23 next. Land pattas to more than one lakh beneficiaries will be distributed by Prime Minister Modi in the function to be held at Jerengapthar.
