Guwahati, August 19, 2019:

The Akhil Bhatariya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest in Guwahati city of Assam today in demand of a 'clean' National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The student organization organized a protest rally from Ulubari highschool playground to the NRC office located in Bhangagarh.

The students have collectively demanded a "fair and free" NRC and urged the concerned authorities to ensure that a 'clean' NRC is published.

"We don't care if it takes a further one year to publish the NRC. As it currently stands, it is a wastepaper, a statement that has been reiterated by many, thus we want a free NRC", said a student, while talking to Inside Northeast.

The Akhil Bhatariya Vidyarthi Parishad has alleged that the current version of the NRC seeks to give citizenship rights to 'foreigners'. The ABVP also questioned the 're-verification' process and sought answers from Prateek Hajela, who had said that he had re-verified 27% of the NRC documents. The Akhil Bhatariya Vidyarthi Parishad has also alleged that many indigenous people in places like Dima Hasao, Kokrajhar, etc, have been left out of the NRC, and stated that they.

Recently, the Hindu Jagaran Mancha (HJM), a socio-cultural organisation, staged protests across Assam demanding 100 percent re-verification of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Ahead of the final publication of NRC, the organisation has demanded “100% correct documents” with the inclusion of the names of all the indigenous people and exclusion of all the suspected foreigners. Protests were held outside NRC offices in Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, Lanka, and Guwahati, among others.
