Citing the devastating deluge in Kerala, the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) in Assam has demanded scrapping of the National Hydro Power Corporation’s (NHPC) 2000-mw Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Project (LSHEP) at Gerukamukh in Arunachal Pradesh.
KMSS chief Akhil Gogoi pointed out that the unprecedented floods in the southern Indian State were caused due to release of excess waters from smaller dams.
He said his organisation feared that the entire State of Assam would be wiped out from the world map due to the environmental disaster likely to be caused by the construction of mega dams in Assam’s neighbouring States. .
Gogoi demanded immediate scrapping of the NHPC’s LSHEP to prevent disaster striking the State in future.
