Seventy organizations came together as one to condemn Indian PM Narendra Modi’s plan to implement the contentious Citizenship (Amendement) Bill, 2016. KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi has found himself at the forefront of the protest. Leaders of the seventy organizations held a press conference to announce their plans to protest the Bill as it is expected to be placed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Speaking about the agenda of the seventy organizations who have come together to condemn and protest the Prime Minister’s announcement of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2018 at a rally in Silchar, Akhil Gogoi said :“We extend our support for the bandh. Since the Bill will be brought to the Parliament tomorrow, we are announcing tomorrow as ‘disgust day’. Tomorrow, the leaders of the seventy organizations will hoist black flags in their respective areas. We invite the people of Assam to shame the BJP, the RSS and the Central government through democratic means.”
Gogoi said that an economic protest will be staged on January 8 and materials such as coal, oil, LPG etc will not be allowed to leave the state by any means necessary, putting a stop to economic activities in the state. Gogoi also announced 9 January as ‘protest day’. He promised a never-before-seen scale of protests in the state to denounce the contentious Bill.
The leader also took a dig a Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. “You have seen that Assamese women have been stripped of their clothes. Sarbananda Sonowal’s police have dragged women by the hair. The woman who was stripped belongs to Sarbananda Sonowal’s village. Sarbananda Sonowal has stripped a woman belonging to his own village!”, Gogoi thundered, referring to an incident in which a woman protester was stripped in a scuffle with BJP party officials.
